Anti-Aging Skin Care for Your 20s

If you’re in your mid to late 20s and starting to see the first faint lines around your eyes, don’t panic. This is normal. Your 20s isn’t time to panic; it’s time to prevent. Getting a few light eye wrinkles and fine lines on your forehead is not uncommon in your mid to late 20s. However, this is the best time to develop good skin care habits to stave off premature wrinkles. In your 20s, you lay the groundwork for what your skin will look like in the future.

So what can you do? The single most important thing you can do now to prevent premature eye wrinkles is wear sunscreen of spf 15 or higher every day. I promise you that prolonged sun exposure without wearing sunscreen will come back to haunt you later in life in the form of wrinkles, rough texture and dark splotches. If you’ve already had significant sun exposure - say, if you were a teen tanning salon junkie who couldn’t imagine life past graduation - there’s still hope. Research has shown that wearing sunscreen now can allow the skin to heal some of the damage that has already been done.

Another thing you can do is to look for skin care products and eye wrinkle creams that contain antioxidants. These wrinkle fighting ingredients can help prevent damage caused by the stress, the sun and pollution. Antioxidants to look for include retinoids/retinal (vitamin A), ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and tocopherol (vitamin E).

I think some of the best products for this age group is the Neutrogena Antioxidant Age Reverse line. It hydrates, repairs and protects at the same time.

Use Neutrogena AntiOxidant Age Reverse Day Lotion SPF 20 during the day to protect and prevent, and Neutrogena AntiOxidant Age Reverse Night Cream at night to speed up the skin’s healing process.

For your eye area, try using Neutrogena Ageless Restoratives Energy Renewal Eye Cream twice a day before you apply your day or night moisturizer.

Eye Wrinkle Cream for Sensitive or Allergy-Prone Eyes

A reader recently commented on one of my posts saying that allergies are making her eyes red and itchy and causing excessive puffiness and eye wrinkles when she wakes up in the morning. She also said that eye wrinkle creams seem to be making the symptoms worse. If this is the case, take a good look at the ingredients list on these eye wrinkle creams. You may be having an allergic reaction to one or more of the ingredients. I would definitely suggest talking to your doctor to determine if the products are causing a reaction.

If your current eye wrinkle cream often irritates your eyes, stop using it immediately. You may want to consider a chemical-free product, such as the Juice Beauty line. These products are made of 95% certified organic ingredients without pesticides, parabens or other harmful toxins. Juice Beauty makes a great eye wrinkle cream called Juice Beauty Green Apple Nutrient Eye Cream.

Juice Beauty Green Apple Nutrient Eye Cream

It contains vitamin E and avocado oil to hydrate the eye area, green tea and cucumber oil to decrease puffy eyes, vitamin C to brighten and protect the skin, and vitamin A to stimulate cell regeneration and reduce eye wrinkles.

Another natural tip is to place cool green tea bags over your eyes. Place two tea bags in hot water, then remove the tea bags and let them cool. Once they are cool, prop your neck and shoulders up on a few pillows to allow gravity to reduce the fluid that has gathered under your eyes. Then place a tea bag on each eye lid and lie there for 5-10 minutes. This not only helps decrease eye puffiness, but it also helps sooth the eye area, making it a great homemade treatment for those with itchy allergy-prone eyes.

Sleeping Positions to Prevent Eye Wrinkles

I’ve always been a side-sleeper. Lately I’ve noticed that as I’ve gotten older, my eye wrinkles are more pronounced when I first wake up in the morning. They gradually lighten a bit after I shower and prepare for my day, but I’m beginning to see that the years of sleeping on my side are etching lines into my face. Yikes!

According to the American Academy of Dermatology and WebMD, I’m not alone. The AAD cautions that sleeping in the same position every night can lead to the formation of “sleep lines,” which are lines that become etched into your skin’s surface while you sleep and don’t disappear once you’re awake.

Think about it. You know that making repetitive facial movements, like squinting and smiling, can eventually create eye wrinkles and crows feet. These sleep lines are formed the same way. When you sleep on your stomach, the skin on your forehead often gets bunched up, which can lead to forehead creases. Sleeping on your side can cause your cheeks to scrunch up toward your eyes, forming wrinkles under and around the eyes.

So what can we do? Besides investing in a good anti eye wrinkle cream, the AAD suggests sleeping on your back to reduce eye wrinkle formation. If you’re like me and tend to switch positions often while sleeping, try putting pillows on either side of you to act as bumpers. These pillows will help prop you up and keep you on your back the whole night.

Best wishes for sweet dreams and a wrinkle-free morning!

Summer Eye Skin Care

In addition to wearing sunscreen and drinking plenty of water, one of the best things you can do for your skin in the summertime is to ease up on the rich moisturizers and thick eye wrinkle creams during the day. While you want your skin to stay hydrated, during the summer your skin doesn’t need the same level of moisture as needed in the winter months.

Slathering on the eye wrinkle cream and moisturizer can build a barrier on the skin and actually prevent moisture from being absorbed. It can also trap skin cells, creating a duller complexion. So, thicker does not always mean better. In fact, some of the best eye wrinkle creams are light-weight. Plus, eye wrinkle creams that are too rich for your skin type can prevent skin cells from properly sloughing off, which can form milia, or small cysts, around the eye area.

An example of an effective light-weight eye wrinkle cream is La Roche-Posay Redermic Eyes. It’s actually a gel but moisturizes like a cream, without creating the thick barrier on your skin. It contains vitamin C to repair and protect the skin, and vitamin E and hyaluronic acid to moisturize.

Of course, you know your skin best. If you have dry skin, go ahead and apply a layer of moisturizer, let it soak in, and then apply a second layer if your skin still feels dry. It is good, however, to wear a slightly thicker moisturizer at night when skin cells rejuvenate a little faster.

Free Sample Alert! Kinerase Cream

Sephora is giving away FREE samples of the new Kinerase PhotoFacials sun damage reversal products! This new Kinerase cream system claims to replicate the benefits of the popular dermatologist-performed photofacial procedure. It reverses the signs of sun damage by reducing eye wrinkles and other fine lines, and improving uneven skin pigmentation (color), tone and texture. The Kinerase PhotoFacials system includes a daily exfoliating cleanser, day moisturizer with spf 50 to protect the skin, and a night moisturizer with kinetin to stimulate cell renewal and reduce the signs of aging. Because this 3-step system is lacking a Kinerase eye cream, I highly recommend adding Kinerase Intensive Eye Cream to the regimen. How to Get A Tan Without Getting Eye Wrinkles

It’s getting to be that time of year again - vacation time!  If you’re headed to the beach, you probably don’t want to stick out by being the palest person there.  Rather than your pasty skin announcing that it’s your first day of vacation, you can look like you’ve been at the beach for weeks already.

No, I’m not talking about tanning beds.  Tanning is actually the leading cause of premature wrinkles.  Avoid the eye wrinkles and sun damage by applying sunless self tanner instead.  There are many different effective brands of self tanner for your body that you can buy at local drugstores.  My favorite is Neutrogena.  However, you shouldn’t use the same self tanner on your face as you do on the rest of your body.  Self tanners for the body are not formulated for use on the face and can clog pores.  Instead, get a self tanner that is specifically for the face.

The best self tanner for face that I’ve found is called Fake Bake Anti-Aging Facial Self Tanner.  In addition to being lightweight and streak-free, it contains powerful eye wrinkle fighters such as moisturizing tocopherol (vitamin E) and Matrixyl (palmitoyl pentapeptide), which is also found in highly effective anti aging and eye wrinkle creams such as StriVectin and Olay eye products.

Fake Bake Anti-Aging Facial Self Tanner

To apply the face tanner, first wash your face thoroughly and use an exfoliating scrub to remove any dead skin.  Once your face is dry, squeeze about a quarter size of the self tanner into your hands.  Starting at your cheekbones, thoroughly rub the self tanner all over your face.  It’s important to get a thin layer of self tanner evenly distributed all over your face.  To create an authentic sun-kissed look, you can apply a thin second layer to just your cheekbones and top of your nose, where the sun hits your face the most.  Next, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water.  Pay particular attention to scrubbing your knuckles and between your fingers, where the self tanner tends to collect.

Once the self tanner is dry, apply your eye wrinkle cream and sunscreen with spf 15 or higher.  You’re on your way to being a bronzed - and wrinkle-free - beach beauty!

Causes and Treatment of Milia Under Eyes

Have you ever had little white bumps under or around your eyes?  These are called milia, and they are tiny cysts formed by blocked oil glands.  This can be caused by using thick, oil-based creams and cosmetics, such as creamy eye shadows, heavy eye wrinkle cream or under eye concealer, that prevent skin cells from sloughing off naturally.  Another cause is excessive sun exposure, which damages the skin and also prevents natural skin cell turnover.

If you are prone to getting milia under or around your eyes, try using an eye wrinkle cream that is lighter.  A gel or a serum may be a better option for you.  Also, gently exfoliate the affected area a couple times a week to encourage cell regeneration.  You can also prevent milia by choosing a lightweight eye wrinkle cream that contains sunscreen and retinoids.

If you have milia under your eyes, you have a few treatment options.  First, discontinue your current eye cream, which is probably the culprit.  If the milia are large and detracting from your appearance, make an appointment with a dermatologist to have them removed.  Do not try to remove them yourself.  If they are small, use a topical retinol cream such as Retin-A to help exfoliate the skin, and avoid using any heavy creams around the eye area.  If they don’t go away, consult a dermatologist or an aesthetician that is experienced in eye skin care.

How to Reduce Puffy Eyes from Allergies

I live in one of the worst places for allergies, and lately I’ve seen many people - myself included! - with red, puffy eyes and inflamed under eye bags.  If you also suffer from allergies, don’t give in to the temptation to rub those itchy eyes!  First, consult your physician on the best way to relieve the irritation.  The skin around your eyes is the thinnest, most delicate on your face, and rubbing or stretching this skin will break down the skin’s collagen and elastin, leading to premature eye wrinkles and sagging.  Then, click on the video below to learn how to reduce those puffy eyes.

How to reduce puffy eyes

The only thing I recommend doing differently is to use your ring finger, rather than your middle finger, to blend in eye wrinkle cream.  Your ring finger is a weaker digit, so you will put less pressure on that delicate under eye skin.

The eye pads referred to in this video are Shiseido Benefiance Pure Retinol Instant Treatment Eye Mask pads.  The ginseng extract in these pads helps tighten the skin and reduce puffiness, and the retinol, a vitamin A derivative, helps to smooth eye wrinkles.  They’re also great for lightening dark circles, another common symptom of allergies.
