Skin Care Tips for Those in Their 40’s

Once the age of 40 rolls around, it becomes extremely clear who takes care of their skin and who doesn’t. If you haven’t been taking the appropriate measures to help your skin, you skin will be drier, less firm and thinner.

Your main concern when you hit 40 is the skin around your eyes. You will notice more frequent dark circles, eye puffiness and drooping lids. This is the time, more than ever, that you should have a daily regiment for skin care. I would advise using a product with retinol 2-3 times per week. (Retinol is proven to stimulate collagen growth.) Use a topical eye serum with Vitamin C to brighten your complexion and overall appearance. It also doesn’t hurt to incorporate drinking plenty of water and green vegetables to help work from the inside - out.

Be sure and wash your face twice a day. When you wake up, wash your face with an antioxidant cleanser, a hydrating facial cream and sunscreen with minimum SPF 15. At night, wash your face again, use a night time face and eye cream. Most night eye creams work hard while you sleep to fight off the signs of aging.

Out of all of this information, the most important thing you can remember is to always use sunscreen and eye cream. If you start these early, they will help fight environmental damage, while also giving your skin the moisture and vitamins it needs.

In order to really tackle eye wrinkles and prevent them, you have to be diligent and do this regiment every day. These treatments will only be successful if you do them daily. Good luck ladies!

Top 10 Ways to Get Rid of Dark Circles

Dark circles can be a big annoyance for some people. Whether the cause is allergies, tiredness or just heredity, there are ways to reduce the appearance of these dark demons! Follow these simple eye skin care tricks

Step 1: KNOW YOUR ALLERGIES- It is essential to know what you are allergic to so you can eliminate that problem altogether. Be sure to check everything from a seasonal allergy, food allergy, pet allergy and anything that could possibly trigger an allergic reaction. An allergy that causes dark circles, which is commonly overlooked is gluten. Be very through when checking these over!

Step 2: GET PLENTY OF SHUT EYE- It’s common knowledge that not getting enough sleep results in those nasty dark circles under your eyes. You need to determine how much sleep your body needs and then get your body into a routine! The normal body needs between 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Keep in mind that alcohol and drugs negatively affect your sleeping patterns!

Step 3: USE FACIAL PRODUCTS BEFORE BED- There are tons of great night facial creams and masks out there. They can help reduce the appearance of discoloration and puffiness. You can find recipes to make your own face mask! Another trick for your skin before you go to bed is to take a washcloth and wet it with cold water. Squeeze all excess water out and place it over your eyes while you sleep.

Step 4: CUCUMBERS, TEA BAGS AND ICE CUBES-Any one of these items can help reduce the appearance of swelling and puffiness. Tea bags have tannin and this ingredient helps reduce discoloration and swelling. Cucumber slices are used to diminish puffiness and help to make your eyes look refreshed. Try doing either of these treatments in the morning and be sure to lie down. Make sure the caffeinated tea bags are damp and the cucumber slices cool. Usually 10-15 minutes will do the trick!

Step 5: FROZEN Q-TIP- Try wetting a cotton swap and then placing it in the freezer. Once frozen, take it out and gently wipe it under your eyes where the dark circles are appearing. This technique helps to relax your eyes and the surrounding skin. When using the cotton swab, close your eyes and try not to flinch.

Step 6: GET EYE CREAM WITH RETINOL AND VITAMIN K- There are an abundance of eye creams out there. When selecting your skin care product, be sure the ingredients “retinol” and “vitamin K” are in there! These 2 ingredients have been proven to reduce discoloration and puffy eyes. The best results come from long-term daily use. Find the best eye creams for you.

Step 7: STOP THAT EYE RUBBING- Allergies are a common reason for eye rubbing. When you rub your eyes, it irritates the skin and can lead to broken capillaries. This causes both puffy eyes and discoloration. Next time you start to rub your eyes, STOP in your tracks!

Step 8: EAT A WELL-BALANCED MEAL AND DRINK LOTS OF WATER- If you aren’t eating the right foods, then you aren’t getting the proper vitamins and minerals your body needs! Be sure to include a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially cabbage, spinach and other green, leafy vegetables. If you aren’t the vegetable type, you can supplement a vitamin in order to get the necessary nutrition. Drinking water helps to improve circulation!

Step 9: CUT OUT THE SALT-Excess salt can cause your body to keep water in unusual places, including under your eyes! This results in puffy eyes. Too much salt can also impede your circulation, which causes your blood vessels under your skin to appear bluer. Moral of the story, cut back on the salt!

Step 10: NO SMOKING- Not only does smoking threaten your life, it causes vascular problems that make your blood vessels appear more prominent. Like excess salt, they make your veins look bluer!

Facial Exercises Help to Reduce Eye Wrinkles

As we age, our skin starts to wrinkle and sag because of a loss of collagen and other external factors such as the sun, health issues, smoking and injuries. Since we can’t stop the inevitable, there are certain steps we can take to reduce the appearance of eye wrinkles and other facial sagging. One way is by doing facial exercises!

Facial exercises are a great way to tighten up your face, while saving time and money. Think of these exercises like weight lifting. Lifting weights help to tighten and tone your body. Apply this same reasoning to your face. If you are doing contractions and applied resistance to specific muscles in your face, your skin will in turn tighten, increase muscle size and provide a natural face lift. Facial exercises can reduce droop jowls and cheeks, tighten your whole face and help diminish the signs of eye wrinkles and puffy eyes.

There are two different types of exercises: isometric and resistance. In a nut shell, isometric exercises tone and firm face muscles. It can be uncommon to have dramatic results with this form of exercise. It is greatly dependant upon your age and if you have extensive muscle loss.

Resistance exercises, on the other hand, work to strengthen and build your muscles. This is the form that brings all the much needed oxygen and nutrients to your face to feed your staved skin cells. These exercises really fill out and lift up your face. In my opinion, resistance is more effective and much more time efficient.

This is one of my favorite facial exercises I do daily! It’s specializes on eliminating forehead wrinkles. First step is to lift your eyebrows up as far as you can. Then, put your fingers at the top of your forehead. Slide your fingers down toward your eyebrows in a smooth motion. Think of it as pushing your raised forehead back down.

When your fingers meet your eyebrows, lower your forehead into a frown and slide your fingers back up to your hairline. You are doing the exact opposite as the previous step. Now you are trying to push your forehead back up. When you have done this, you have completed 1 set. Make sure to do 10 sets each day!

Although we can’t completely stop the aging process (although we would all like to), we can now put up a good fight to help reduce signs of aging and wrinkles! Good luck ladies!

What Causes Eye Wrinkles in the First Place?

Everyone will succumb to eye wrinkles at some point in their life.  It’s an inevitable factor, but what causes them?  Commonly referred to as “crow’s feet” or “laugh lines,” eye wrinkles can be a result of any number of things.  Below is a list of common reasons why people can get these and how they vary from person to person.

Some people are genetically predisposed to having either more or less eye wrinkles.  If crow’s feet are a common trait your family members’ share, there is a good chance you will have them too.

Facial expressions can be a precursor to eye wrinkles.  With each expression you make, various muscles in your face contract and extend to show if you are happy, sad, angry, etc. Smashing your face into a pillow when you sleep or over squinting can also lead to eye wrinkles.

The wonderful ball of fire in the sky, commonly referred to as the sun, is one of the leading causes of eye wrinkles. Two ways the sun can give you wrinkles is from squinting into the sun, as mentioned earlier, and prolonged exposure to the UV rays. The leathery appearance not only affects your body, it affects your eyes too.

Injury and exposure to allergies or chemicals (such as cigarette smoke) can increase the wrinkles around your eyes. To avoid more eye wrinkles, be sure to wear protective eyewear whenever indicated.

Although completely eliminating eye wrinkles is impossible, small changes such as limiting your time in the sun and wearing protective eyewear can help reduce the wrinkles.  Also, using an eye wrinkle cream can help soften the appearance under your eyes.  Make sure to wear your best sunglasses and lather on that sunscreen!

Anti-Aging Skin Care for Your 20s

If you’re in your mid to late 20s and starting to see the first faint lines around your eyes, don’t panic. This is normal. Your 20s isn’t time to panic; it’s time to prevent. Getting a few light eye wrinkles and fine lines on your forehead is not uncommon in your mid to late 20s. However, this is the best time to develop good skin care habits to stave off premature wrinkles. In your 20s, you lay the groundwork for what your skin will look like in the future.

So what can you do? The single most important thing you can do now to prevent premature eye wrinkles is wear sunscreen of spf 15 or higher every day. I promise you that prolonged sun exposure without wearing sunscreen will come back to haunt you later in life in the form of wrinkles, rough texture and dark splotches. If you’ve already had significant sun exposure - say, if you were a teen tanning salon junkie who couldn’t imagine life past graduation - there’s still hope. Research has shown that wearing sunscreen now can allow the skin to heal some of the damage that has already been done.

Another thing you can do is to look for skin care products and eye wrinkle creams that contain antioxidants. These wrinkle fighting ingredients can help prevent damage caused by the stress, the sun and pollution. Antioxidants to look for include retinoids/retinal (vitamin A), ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and tocopherol (vitamin E).

I think some of the best products for this age group is the Neutrogena Antioxidant Age Reverse line. It hydrates, repairs and protects at the same time.

Use Neutrogena AntiOxidant Age Reverse Day Lotion SPF 20 during the day to protect and prevent, and Neutrogena AntiOxidant Age Reverse Night Cream at night to speed up the skin’s healing process.

For your eye area, try using Neutrogena Ageless Restoratives Energy Renewal Eye Cream twice a day before you apply your day or night moisturizer.

Botox Side Effects - Know The Risks

The popular injectable wrinkle remedy Botox, like every other medicine, has side effects. These side effects are undesirable results that could occur along with the benefits that Botox injections offer. The operational word is “could”. That’s because not all who undergo Botox treatment suffer from side effects; most of those who get Botox injections do not experience any adverse effects at all.

Botox side effects were identified in extensive and thorough clinical studies and trials conducted by qualified medical research teams. In these trials and studies, the effects produced by Botox in a group of individuals were analyzed and weighed against data gathered from control groups. The results of these analyses established exactly what adverse effects could be brought about by undergoing Botox treatments.

It has been found that Botox treatments have a 3 percent probability of causing droopy eyelids and nausea, a 2 percent probability for muscle weakness and facial pain, and 1 percent for hypertension, tooth problems, indigestion and heartburn. These were established in clinical studies on the use Botox for cosmetic purposes such as in diminishing the occurrence of facial lines and wrinkles.
Misalignment or vertical deviations of the eyes, droopy eyelids, upper respiratory infections, difficulty in swallowing, neck pain, and headache are common Botox side effects in patients being treated for medical conditions such as cervical dystonia, blepharospasm (eyelid spasms), strabismus (crossed eyes), and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Clinical studies revealed that there is an 11 to 21 percent chance of experiencing these side effects.

Other common Botox side effects that have been observed are anxiety, cough and runny or stuffy nose, dry mouth, sore throat, bleeding and/or soreness at the injection site, infection, weakness, drowsiness, dizziness, back pain, and flu-like symptoms such as fever and chills. About 2 to 10 percent of people undergoing Botox therapy for any purpose manifest these Botox side effects.

There are Botox side effects that are potentially serious. These side effects should be immediately reported to a medical practitioner. What are these side effects? They include allergic reactions (such as unexplained rashes, itching, hives, unexplained swelling, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, and wheezing), chest pain, double vision, speech problems, and dry eyes (if being treated for muscle spasms near the eyes).

If you experience any of the Botox side effects mentioned above, the best course of action is to let your doctor know at the soonest possible time. There are cases in which it would be difficult to tell the exact cause of a symptom that you are manifesting; it may or may not be caused by Botox treatments. But whatever the cause is, your doctor will know what to do.

There will always be disadvantages that go along with the benefits that Botox treatments offer. The important thing is to be able to tell if you are manifesting Botox side effects and know what to do in such cases.
